Calibre 40.6 mm

Designers: Jean Pettavel and Henri Gerber respectively

Description: Launched during the first crisis of the XX century, the 40.6 mm calibre was deliberately designed by the technical director to make precision watches affordable for everyone by using simplified components manufactured according to the state of the art in watchmaking at the time, particularly in the production of pins and pinions. It was very reliable and highly successful, with almost one million units produced until 1936.

The manufacturing process of its successor, the 38.5 mm, was influenced by the harsh conditions of the black years of the 1929-1935 Great Depression. It was jointly designed by the technical office, under the direction of Henri Berger and was characterised by a brass escape-wheel and a monometallic balance with an elinvar Breguet balance-spring, which was much cheaper than the bimetallic version with a steel balance-spring.

Economical, simple, robust and reliable, the 17" was sold, to begin with, in several overseas depressed markets, such as that in Brazil. With its very modern design, it would quickly become popular throughout the entire world. In fact, it was launched in Europe only one year later and completely overtook the 40.6mm which disappeared in 1936. It was the first calibre to feature the "Art Deco" design of the bridge, which marked a departure from the "Art Nouveau" meandering lines of its predecessors. Its success was such that one million units would be produced until 1966.
